The Kindle 2 offers creepy, illegal bedtime story
The Kindle 2 is a new text-to-speech device offered for Amazon.com e-books. You can buy the e-books through amazon and read them on your kindle, or use the fancy text-to-speech option and have the book read to you.
The problem is similar to that which CD’s are facing. With CD’s people are exclaiming that buying them then ripping them onto iTunes is illegal because you’re getting 2 copies but only paying for one. Similarly, the kindle 2 is said to be an e-book as well as an audiotape, again for one price. This seems like another argument that will bounce around the courts for years to come.

This is an interesting view of copyright and the uses of the new Kindle 2. I do think that this could become an issue in the future if the new Kindle becomes incredibly popular. If it doesn’t, I doubt that many people will pursue it. As far as whether or not I believe this is a violation of copyright, I think that the device itself is allowing it and if courts are going to deal with the issue, they should focus on the Kindle itself. I’m not sure that users can be at fault if the device is designed to function in both text and audio.
